Theatres to be CLOSED forever? : There is an uneasy uncertainty in the exhibition business due to the coronavirus pandemic, which is forcing filmmakers and producers to come up with alternate strategies. The only viable option before them seems to be a direct release on OTT (over the top) platforms. Online streaming giant Amazon Prime is all set for the world premiere of 7 movies in 5 Indian languages as the theaters across the country have been closed down due to the coronavirus pandemic.
For nearly 2 months, Indian movie theatres have stayed shut. Films have missed out on the lucrative summer vacation period when schools and college close and families visit theatres in hoards. Trade experts estimate losses of ₹80-90 crore per week as theatres have remained shut since mid-March. Sharing her thoughts on the same, Tollywood actress Rituparna Sengupta said that theaters can never be replaced by OTT. “This is an option in this situation. The current situation is tough for everyone and the entertainment industry is also battling it. OTT is an option which is viable in this situation as no one knows when cinema halls will open,” she added. It remains to be seen what happens next!
